How do you read the Psalms? When I wrote the title I had to decide between calling the sermon “Psalms” or “The Psalms.” “The Psalms” is a way of looking at the book as a unique collection. “Psalms” seems a more general way of thinking, as the collection is an individual book in the Cannon of Scripture. So, how do you read Psalms? Do you think about which division you are in? Do you ask yourself, “Is this a messianic Psalm?” A Psalm of lament? A Psalm of joy? The list of possibilities is extensive and it actually matters! In today’s message, the plan is to introduce the major approaches for our gleanings in the Psalms.
